How do you help someone who is depressed?

This goes deep. Someone has had a bad life, bad things done to them, and, for some unknown reason, bad things just keep happening. Actual person (not me...family): sexual torture, cancer, amputation, bad skin condition, feeling of being ugly and not wanted, divorce; alone and choosing to live miles away from family......???

How do you help someone who is depressed?
give him a gun.
Reply:You get them to professional help
Reply:I have a friend who suffers from bipolar disorder and i think mostly just being their and never doing any thing to hurt them emotionally
Reply:Its difficult to change things for a depressed person and I know that this is a standard answer but just be there as much as you can, the problem is you can start to get depressed too and that just don't help anyone. I talk from experience!
Reply:this is a tough one, but somewhere along the line you have to accept that love for yourself is the road out of and to salvation for yourself and your self worth, and planting that seed and changing a way of thinking that is more positive and loving is the only way up from the place that you are in. We all have the strength to change, but the first step is always the wisdom to know we have to change, courage to admit that we have to and the strength of will to carry it out. start to make those changes for your self, or by professional help, and you will be surprised what help and love comes your way and the life you wish for could be a reality. Good luck the first step starts with you .....
Reply:Be there supporting and listening to them. They really need to seek help for themselves via their GP who can either prescribe medication or a referral for counselling. It sounds like a lot of bad things have befallen your friend who could benefit from counselling to help put things in perspective. I wish him/her better mental health.
Reply:someone with that many issues can't be helped by a novice (no offense.. I'm not skilled enough to help that person either). Best you can do is be supportive and make sure they see a counselor (I'm sure they have.. but make sure they follow the advice and keep going.. drive them if you have to.. be a support)

Really.. just being there is the best you can do... you'll piss them off sometimes (because they won't understand how you could care about them so much.. and will try to push you away)... but just keep on keeping on.
Reply:You're right this is deep. I would suggest this person get some counseling. But, if they refuse just try to be there for that person. Try to make him/her laugh as much as possible. Also encourage this person not to wallow in self pity. The more we wallow, the worse we feel and the more bitter we get. Also, encourage this person to change things the things that can be changed. See a dermatologist about the skin condition. Go to a beautician and get a hair cut. That usually makes people feel better. Tell them that they are better off without the spouse that divorced them. Anything else that you can think of to help that person get some self confidence back.
Reply:What a lot of terrible things to happen, no wonder they are feeling depressed. Although talking to them and asking if there is anything you can do, listen to what they say, actually hear what they say, dont misinterpret what you think you want to hear. Sometimes you may need to suggest that they may need to seek medical advice and make sure that if you want to if you offer your support then make sure you can stick to it. Sometimes though just being there, perhaps not even talking its just the fact someone is there. You may if you are really concerned tell them that you think they need to see someone, and you will go with them. Its very hard for a depressed person to acknowledge when they need help, they always think they are coping, until there not then it does not matter. I know i have been there, but i had help and support from my sister and family. I hope this helps you. Helen.
Reply:There is no simple answer because all these aspects contribute to the person's sense of low self esteem. There are medical and psychological routes to follow but it has to start by finding some stars in the person night sky! Some things they do see as talents or positives. There needs to be a point to making changes and trying otherwise it is simply another chore and not one that the person will take too. I wish you and them well, it all starts with communication and having a friend or 2 who will make th effort for no self reward other than being there and being true.

Best wishes

Reply:Helping someone who is depressed is a very difficult task.

Two of my friends went through very dark times when they were depressed and it was quite challenging to support them. Often people who are in a bad place lash out, they are easily upset or annoyed and struggle with day to day life.

First of all I would ask does this person feel able to talk to their doctor? In some cases, medication can be prescribed which helps correct the balance of chemicals in the brain, after which therapies may be more effective.

Professional counselling can help, but support from friends and family will also go a long way - giving the person the opportunity to talk about things and being there for them.

The Samaritans offer free, confidential emotional support at any time of the day or night by phone, text message or email. They do not offer opinions or advice, but will be there to listen should you or your family member ever need to get things off your chest. http://www.samaritans.org/

Well done for being there for your relative - keep up the good work and look after yourself too.

Warmest regards,

Arwen
Reply:I went through the whole cancer and depression thing myself. Clinical depression has to be treated professionally. The problem is getting the person to go to the doctor about it...do whatever it takes to get her there even if you have to tie her up and drag her.

How can I get my cat to lose weight?

He is a strict housecat, 10 years old, and weighs 30lbs. He did lose some weight after I got my second cat, but now that I've had her for a couple years, he has gained it all back. I feed him Iams Multi-cat formula dry food in the morning, and 1/2 can Friskies wet food in the evening. The vet told me I have to feed him wet food because of a dry-skin condition he tends to get. And he has a history of urinary-tract infections from bad dry food. I can't take him to the vet anymore cuz he gets mean. I can't get him to play to get excersize and there's no way he's walking on a leash. I'd appreciate any tips anyone can give!! Thanks!

How can I get my cat to lose weight?
Hi there...Having both feline lower urinary tract disorders (FLUTD) and a cat that is overweight will require a delicate balance of diet so I'll do my best to explain the needs of both first then how you can achieve weight loss and management as well as avoid future recurrences of FLUTD symptoms.

A little background about causes of FLUTD. It is caused by several factors, and combinations of these factors, which include obesity, stress, urinary pH, water and fibre intake in the animal's diet. Recurrence is common with FLUTD cats so preventive measures such a canned food diet to keep hydration levels high plus any other ways to encourage more water consumption is a must, easy access to multiple litter boxes in addition to regular check ups as well as supplementation with prescriptions depending on the severity of the condition.

Cats who eat dry cat foods tend to suffer from recurring episodes and this seems to be a common denominator with cats diagnosed with various types of FLUTD. The idea is to acidify the urine because cats with FLUTD have low urine pH so your goal is to reverse this and canned foods have been known to achieve the results.

Additionally, most commercial grade cat foods contain corn, corn meal which are fillers (carbohydrates) that bind the dry food together as a way of keeping foods lasting longer. Try finding cat food products which are devoid of these ingedients. The first ingredients should show chicken, chicken meal, etc. Most show the first ingredients as corn on the ingredient labels. IAMs, Science Diet, Purina, Whiskas, Friskies ...all have corn listed as the main ingredient. Cats who eat these tend to always feel hungry because the carbs don't metabolize fast enough and cats are obligate carnivores so they need a diet devoid of these types of carbs. Products such as Innova EVO, Nature's Variety Prairie, Felidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, James Wellbeloved (for UK residents), are some examples of premium brands available. Most cats who eat these find that they do not eat to eat as much because their appetite is better satiated.

Additionally, it's important to schedule feed a cat so you can monitor servings taken in during the day http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/news/feed... . Each product lists the recommended servings based on a age and weight. For an overweight cat you would be reducing the intake gradually by 10% each week that the vet recommends is an appropriate caloric intake. Cats who are switched from a free-fed diet should be fed multiple times a day (if permittable) such as once in the morning, mid-day, and then evening before your bedtime.

When switching to a new brand of cat food it is also important to note that sudden changes can cause sever bowel distress. Cats have very sensitive digestive systems so the quick change will cause bouts of diarrhoea and vomiting. Any vet can confirm this fact. Cat food should be changed gradually by mixing the current brand with the new brand over the course of several weeks. For example you would take 3/4 servings of the old cat food to 1/4 servings with the new for one week...then the next week 1/2 to 1/2...then following 1/4 of the old to 3/4 of the new in the third week before completing the switch in the final week. http://www.peteducation.com:80/article.c...

Furthermore, some cats can take off the weight faster by feeding a canned food diet, which is very helpful for cats who suffer from FLUTD. For some reason the hydration in the canned products helps metabolize food better and are also completely devoid of carbohydrates, which is more optimal for the feline's body and while at the same acidifies the urine pH which is perfect for cats who have FLUTD . When cats eat raw meat in the wild they get hydration from the fresh meat juices as well as some roughage from the animals who are natural herbivores. A mixture of canned and dry are always best for cats in the long-term, which many people are unaware of. We are have been exposed to so many commercial ads regarding dry food for cats, but in reality it's the manufacturer's who benefit rather than the cats. Cats are not naturally designed to eat dry--the products were designed for convenience for the owner.

Here's an article about commercial cat food; dry vs. canned, proper nutritional needs, etc: http://www.consumersearch.com/www/family...

Finally, most cats become bored with toys quickly. It's important to rotate them by hiding them and then bringing them back out again so the appear to be like new toys. Interactive toys are the best ones to use to get a cat moving such as a laser light. Most cats love chasing the light. The goal is to get the cat to move back and forth at least for 5 minutes to begin as some tire more easily than others especially if they are overweight. You can increase play time more if they enjoy it. Some cats love chasing feather teasers tied on a string too. Experiment to what gets your cat moving. Just please remember most overweight cats tire easily so keep the sessions short and fun. Interactive toys are the best ways to get your cat to exercise rather than leaving toys for them to play with. They only bat at those and really don't move enough. Not only does the interactive toys work better, but it's a bonding experience for both of you as well.

Here are some websites that I've researched to help prepare for the long road ahead to minimize the repeat episodes:

Reply:feed him less..sorry u did ask sorry if my answer was stating the obvious x
Reply:This shouldn't be too difficult for you.

What you should do is take him completely off the dry food, and instead of Friskies, feed him a good quality canned food. Because of his extremely high weight, I would recommend feeding him around 2/3 of a can of a 6oz can per day. I normally say a full can per day, but perhaps in his case a little less would be better.

Because he's already eating some canned food, the transition shouldn't be that difficult. If you feel bad about taking him off dry completely, I would switch to a better brand (Iams isn't very good unfortunately) and only let him have a spoonful per day.

I've linked to suggestions for good canned foods and the better dry foods. Two kinds not listed in there are Nature's Variety Instincts and Wellness Core. I would avoid Evo, even in small quantities, because it's rather high in calories.

Other links will back up what I've said and will give you more info.

The weight loss does have to occur slowly at the rate of about 1 pound per month. Any faster and your kitty could suffer from hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver).

This is what I did to get Poppy to lose weight. She only got as high as 25 pounds, but this has been working!

Good luck!
Reply:I think the food that you are feeding could be the problem. Iams and Friskies are very poor quality. This article will explain more and teach you how to choose a healthier cat food:

http://www.api4animals.org/facts.php?p=3...

Also, Do the two cats get fed at the same time? I'm willing to bet that he is eating some of the other cat's food as well. Feeding them seperately could help.

Do not free feed dry food either. When you give it free-choice, he will constantly be eating and gaining weight. Dry food can be very fattening, especially when it is a poor quality one. Feeding all wet food could help a lot, especially for a cat with urinary issues. Kibble does not clean their teeth as many once thought and so it is not neccessary. If you must feed a dry food, here are some good ones:

Innova

Innova Evo

Wellness

California Natural

Fromm

Nature's Variety

My cat eats Stella and Chewy's. It is a raw meat diet and she has done very well on it. She's even lost weight! Once your cat starts slimming down some, he will be more apt to play and exercise.
Reply:My Tabby cat is 22 pounds and I get my soft food from the vet. The soft food your feeding him may be causing this. I feed my cat r/d prescription Diet food in the morning. He has IBS . the food I feed to him he loves .I divide it 4 ways . Feed him a little triangle a day.I buy in a case. Ask your vet about it....Best of Luck

My Face Is As Oily As Ever!!! help!?

the thing is... My dad has a skin condition (only on his face when he can't control the size of his pores or the oil that comes out) I am the female version of him and I know I'm going to get it! It's really bad and I already cant control the oil on my face already! please help! I don't want to get it... I think it's spelled Rosatia

My Face Is As Oily As Ever!!! help!?
Your fathers condition is called ROSACEA. Here is a web site about it:

http://www.rosacea.org

You should make sure the products you are using are pH correct, which is so important to your skin. Our skin is natural about a 7.0 on the pH scale from 1-14. Most bar soaps or anti-bacterial soaps have a higher pH, which helps them to foam and gives you that squeaky clean feeling. People with oily skin especially like this feeling as it dries up and removes a lot of the oil from the skin. The problem is, in oily skin people whose skin already produces more oil than they need, by removing so much of the oil from the surface of the skin, the oil glands are sent a message to produce more oil and it becomes a viscous cycle of over drying the skin with high pH cleansers and the skin trying to defend itself by producing too much oil. In people with a dry skin which does not produce enough oil of its own, using a high pH cleanser such as soap only further dries out the skin. The oil on the skin is there to protect the skin from the environment and helps to combat aging. By using a pH correct product such as Arbonne, you are not sending your skin to extremes but instead are keeping it well balanced.

For Oily skin I would recommend ARBONNE INTELLIGENCE LINE. This is a 5-step system for the skin. It includes a pH correct cleanser that removes dirt and oil without stripping skin of its vital moisture barrier. An exfoliating thermal fusion masque that increases microcirculation and cell proliferation. It is a product that combines the benefits of a scrub and a masque for deep cleaning. The next product is a toner that helps to constrict pores without drying or upsetting the skins moisture barrier. Then an eye cream that is fast absorbing and contains light reflecting properties to help reduce puffiness and fine lines. Finally a day and night moisturizer that self adjusts to your skin and delivers however much moisture you need.

There is a specialty product in this line called a Personalizer. It is designed to absorb oil before you moisturize or apply make up. It helps keep the oil under control as well as keeping your foundation true to its color.

Here are a few other good things for your skin:

Diet affects everything in our bodies. It plays a vital role in how you look, feel and of course how you age.

Eating right to keep your skin soft, glowing and strong at any age:

·Orange/red fruits and vegetables: can include tomatoes, squash and carrots- these are packed with beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant that is essential for healthy skin, scalp and mucous membranes.

·Shellfish and fish: try salmon, crab, shrimp and lobster- contain astaxanthin, an extremely potent antioxidant that protects your skin from the damaging environment, helps prevent age spots and wrinkling.

·Nuts and seeds- these are rich in vitamin E which helps protect the skin from sun damage

·Citrus fruits- such as oranges, grapefruits, are high in Vitamin C. It is essential to collagen production, and it is the collagen that gives connective tissue strength and resilience.

·Unrefined whole grain- these could be wheat, barley, oats and rye- all contain silica, a mineral that helps to repair damaged skin, hair and nails. Silica helps to strengthen collagen and elastin.

Anti-Aging Super- Foods:

Top pick for this category include any deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables. This includes tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, berries and grapes, garlic, onions, green tea, soybean, cold-water fish and spices such as turmeric, cinnamon and cumin.

All of these are very rich in PHYTOCHEMICALS. These are the molecules that give the food the striking color, taste or smell. Their responsibility is to defend the plants against infection and environmental damage, and in humans they have shown to have anticancer activity. And, just like antioxidants, they help protect the body against harmful free radicals and vascular disease.

These foods also contain omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids help lower cholesterol, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation and facilitate weight loss. Dark leafy greens, cold water fish and soybean are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids.

They are also considered “hot” foods – they help the body burn calories in the form of heat, just by eating them.

Three key elements to help your skin look its best:

·Avoid the damaging sun: with 90% of aging caused by environmental damage and sun exposure, ensure that you wear a product that contains a broad-spectrum sun block, and use it every day. Harmful sunrays penetrate clouds…so sun block is needed on cloudy days as well. Arbonne uses the latest in sunscreen technology in their day creams to ensure that you are protected from both the UVB and UVA rays.

·Practice good skin care: Using skin care products incorrectly can cause problems later in life. Learn how to remove make-up, and apply sunscreen to let skin breath. Follow up with exfoliation to encourage skin cell turnover, and finish with a light moisturizer to protect the skin’s water barrier.

·Don’t mix brands: With hundreds of skin care products launched each year, it’s no wonder that many of us try the latest products…however that can lead to skin irritation and the development of sensitive skin. Skin care products need time to work, and as your body becomes accustomed to the formulas …you will see benefit. Each brand develops products to work together for best results. Pick a brand and stick with it.
Reply:Ask a doctor, they usually have the CORRECT answer!
Reply:I have the same problem, I used proactiv it helped a little but once it gets the hang of your skin it stops working.
Reply:Do some research on the topic ( with google or yahoo). Actually spend some time researching instead of being on the phone or watching T.V.

You will be surprised at how much information you find. Yahoo answers is not really the place to ask about this stuff.
Reply:go to a dermatologist, is the best advice.
Reply:You'll need to talk with a dermatologist, but for now proactiv could help. The biggest thing until you can see a dermatologist is cleaning away the oil without over drying your skin.
Reply:You could try seeing a dermatologist, they might be able to give you several options that might help. I myself am 23 and still have oily skin, it drives me crazy! Nothing has really helped me; if you wash your face too much, it just gets oilier because when you keep washing your face (and especially if you use a harsh cleanser), it starts to dry your skin. To compensate, your skin will actually produce more oil... Ridiculous, I know.

Oil blotters (try Clean %26amp; Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets--I use the generic brand, but they are still good) are good for absorbing excess oil throughout the day. Follow up with some oil-absorbing face powder, that helps to make your skin look matte and staves the oil off a little longer. Avoid humid places--that really exacerbates the problem. Try to find a good oil-fighting cleanser; if you're acne prone as well, find one with Salicylic Acid.

I pretty much have resolved myself to the fact that my skin is going to stay like this until who-knows-when, and for now, the above is pretty much all I can do to keep it in some control.

Hope this helps... Good luck!
Reply:read tips on skincare and much more to help you better with home remedies on this site
Reply:I have naturally very oily skin. This is what I have been doing for the last 1.5 months. My face is no longer oily, feels and looks great.

Let's break the day up.

Morning:

Fill a sink with HOT water. The hotter the better. Add a good amount of Epsom Salt.

I soak my face for about 90-120 seconds coming up for breaths about every 20 seconds. Your face will feel great, and won't be oily. I then jump into a nice hot shower.

Mid day or after work/school or whenever you have time:

Do another soak same as above, at about half the time. This soak is not as important, but if your face starts getting oily this is very good too do.

At night before bed:

Same soak as morning.

Also at least every other night I do an aspirin mask. Go to the store and pick up a bottle of UNCOATED aspirin. That's very important. Pick up a container of PLAIN yogurt and a lemon.

1.I have a little bowl/cup to mix in.

2.I take less than a spoonful on yogurt and place it in the cup.

3.You'll find out you don't need much yogurt.

4.I add 7-9 aspirin to the yogurt.

5.Just let it sit a few minutes and the yogurt will dissolve the aspirin and you'll be able to mix it really easy.

6.Cut that lemon you got into 4 pieces and squeeze some juice into your mixture.

7.Mix.

8.Apply to face with small circular motions. This helps to start exfoliating. Exfoliating is aimed at unclogging a clogged pore before it moves into the pimple stage.

9.You have to figure out how long it's ok to stay on your face. I found 15 min for myself is a good amount of time. If your face hurts well then your leaving it on for too long. Moisturize your face if this happens with Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. Or something else that will not clog pores.

10.When removing the mask again use small circular motions to promote exfoliation.

Aspirin mask should also help dull your red pock marks. You can also add some honey or whatever else you would like to mix. Add anything that is good for the skin.

Yeah this is a little crazy regimen but hell my face has never looked or felt better in the last 7 years. Many other people reported a major break out around week 2-3 but after that it should be good. It took around a month for me to really start seeing the best effects. Just don't give up on it and I'm sure it can help you.

It is what you call keloyds. She has a skin condition in which whenever she gets even a small scrap her skin will heal in the form of a bubble so to speak. Those scars are from her being in a major car accident and due to her condition that's how her bruises healed.
