My gerbil has a bald spot on her thigh, what should I do?

My nine month old gerbil has a bald spot on her thigh, and it almost seems to be getting worse sometimes. Do you think it might be a skin condition or nothing? Please help.

My gerbil has a bald spot on her thigh, what should I do?
Same thing happened with my gerbil years ago. First make sure the skin is not red or irritated. If not, next try and hold her in a white tissue or some toilet paper then check the paper for tiny black specks which would indicate mites. If you don't suspect a skin irritation or mites it could be she's just bored. Try rearranging the cage. After doing this with my gerbil the bald spot grew back. Also you don't indicate a cage mate. Think about getting a friend and introducing it slowly. Gerbils are social animals and could explain if the bald spot it from boredom. Good luck!
Reply:Maybe she is chewing on that area and making the hair fall out, or actually pulling the hair out with her mouth. I would just watch it to see if it goes away or gets better, it's probably nothing to worry about though. I had a hamster that did that and my chihuahua does that now.
Reply:it might be mites. i would look close to her skin and see if you can see any tiny black dots. if so it might be mites. there are spray medications at the petstore to treat the mites! hamsters can get mites from their bedding.
Reply:Rodents often get skin deases. Take it to the vet and get some oitment, it will clear up in no time!
Reply:My sister's hamster had this happen once.

Try and change the bedding. Don't use cedar, hamsters are allergic to it.

If you don't fix it now, she'll eventually turn bald like my sister's hamster did.
